The 9-passenger plane had departed from Austin, Texas, earlier on Sunday.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the crash of a 9-passenger Learjet 60 that occurred in Palm Beach County, Florida, on Sunday. The plane, which had taken off from Austin, Texas, and was heading to the Bahamas, encountered turbulence and icing over Florida and began a rapidly accelerating nosedive, from which it could not recover.
The plane disintegrated on impact in Greenacres, leaving a crater in the pavement. While there were no survivors from the plane, no one on the ground was reportedly injured. Video and air traffic control audio of the tragedy were posted on social media.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy called the crash a horrific tragedy, and stated that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) sent a team to support the NTSB investigation.
“Obviously, this was a cataclysmic plane crash,” Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said Sunday. “It looked like a missile going down … the debris was significant, and it went over a pretty significant distance.”
Hundreds of residents were evacuated from a nearby mobile home park, and businesses in the area have been closed. The crash site is about 10 miles from President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home.
